What is a gynecology?
Gynecology is a branch of medicine focused on the health of the female reproductive system. Gynecologists specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina, as well as providing preventive care and health screenings for women.
Gynecologists perform a wide range of procedures to address various women’s health issues. Some of the most common procedures they perform include:
- Pelvic exam: A physical examination of the pelvic organs, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, to assess overall reproductive health.
- Colposcopy: A procedure to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of abnormal cells using a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope.
- Endometrial biopsy: A procedure to collect a small sample of tissue from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) for examination under a microscope to diagnose conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding or endometrial cancer.
- Hysteroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope, often used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine conditions such as fibroids or polyps.
- Laparoscopy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or ectopic pregnancy, by inserting a laparoscope through small incisions in the abdomen.
- Tubal ligation: A permanent form of contraception, commonly referred to as «getting your tubes tied,» where the fallopian tubes are surgically cut, tied, or blocked to prevent pregnancy.
- Hysterectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the uterus, sometimes including the cervix and ovaries, used to treat various gynecological conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or certain types of cancer.
- Contraceptive implant insertion: A procedure to insert a small, flexible rod under the skin of the upper arm, providing long-term contraception by releasing hormones to prevent pregnancy.
